Chapter 27
Rufus peels himself off me with a grunt, his chest heaving and his skin glistening with sweat. Hurriedly, he gathers up his clothes and pulls on his boxer shorts without even looking at me. I watch him as he moves, bending and ducking to retrieve trousers, shirt and socks flung across the room in a flurry as we gave in to our passions, not caring about anyone or anything in that moment.
'Rufus? Are you okay?'
I prop myself on my elbows, suddenly feeling exposed and vulnerable, conscious that anyone walking past the vast picture window would have had a pretty good view of what had just gone on between us. I draw my knees up to my chest, trying to cover my nakedness.
Rufus perches on the edge of the footstool to pull on his socks, his shirt flapping open. It all happened so quickly, but it was amazing. Furious. Desperate. Animalistic. It was everything I hoped it would be, and more. It didn't last long, but Rufus certainly knew what he was doing. He was like a man possessed and we were two spirits conjoined as one in that moment.
Except now he's grown cold. Why won't he look at me? Is it something I did? Or is he embarrassed? Ashamed? Guilty?
Following his lead, I scoop up my own clothes, pull on my underwear and wriggle my dress over my hips.
'Please talk to me,' I plead as I flatten down my hair. 'What's wrong? Was it something I did?'
Rufus stands to button up his shirt, his breath coming back under control. His fingers are trembling. His face flushed. His expression taut.
'I'm sorry. That should never have happened,' he mumbles, staring at his fingers as they button up his shirt.
'What? No. It was amazing.'
'I took advantage of you,' he says.
'You didn't take advantage of me. If I didn't want it to happen, I'd have told you.'
Finally, he glances at me as he stops fiddling with his shirt. 'Really?'
'Yes, really. It was incredible.'
I move towards him, hopeful of rekindling the mood. I don't want it to be like this. I want him to hold me. And kiss me. Tell me he cares for me and that I'm the most precious woman he's ever been with. And in time, I want him to tell me he loves me. But most of all, I want him to tell me he doesn't want to be with Carmel anymore.
He shakes his head with a sadness in his eyes.
'No, I'm sorry. This was a terrible mistake.'
'What? Don't say that.'
This isn't how I planned it. But it's my fault. I've rushed things. I should have been more patient. Now I've given him what he wants and if I'm not careful, he's going to discard me and pretend it never happened. My throat tightens as a bubble of tears floats to the surface.
I snatch his arm as he turns away. I want him to look at me. To see me. But he wrests free of my grip, ripping one of my nails.
